PostGIS aggiunge supporto per oggetti geografici a PostgreSQL. PostGIS rende il server PostgreSQL spaziale grazie all'uso di coordinate geografiche, permettendogli di essere usato come back-end nei GIS (Geographic Information System), come fanno anche ESRI's SDE o Oracle's Spatial extension.
